and we are going to begin this morning with final good-byes -- as colorado shooting suspect james holmes sits in solitary confinement this morning, relatives of those killed in last friday's theater massacre have begun the grim task of planning their funerals, with the first one being held today. nbc's jay gray reports from aurora. >> reporter: the focus in aurora today turned back to the suspect's apartment. prosecutors and james holmes' state-appointed defenders getting their first look inside. while at the crime scene, a chain-link fence went up around the theater. as mourners in the grieving city search for some kind of comfort in the wake of the tragedy. >> it's a feeling of sadness. and such loss. such loss for all the families. >> reporter: families like the thieves. >> he was one of the best sons

that any man could have. and i've been honored to know him. >> reporter: when the shooting started, 24-year-old alex theves threw his mom and girlfriend to the floor and shielded their body with bullets. >> god sent me an angel, not just that night, but -- for the last two and a half years. he sent me an angel. >> reporter: emotions continue to spill over at makeshift memorials outside the theater. >> it becomes really real. i'm overwhelmed by the tragedy of all of this. >> reporter: they draw strength from hugs and being together, hope from the stories of the heroes like alex and survivors still fighting for their lives. christian bale, the star of the movie forever linked with the massacre spent time with survivors and first responders and we've learned that warner brothers, the studio that produced "the dark knight rises"

donated substantially to a victim's fund which has already raised $2 million. jay gray, nbc news, aurora, colorado. since the colorado shootings, gun control advocates around the country have called toor more restrictions on sales of assault weapons and large amounts of ammunition. either in person or on the internet. however, in colorado, gun sales have increased since the shooting, with people seeking background checks to purchase weapons up by more than 40%. elsewhere the increasingly combative tone on the campaign trail has taken a toll on president obama and mitt romney. according to an nbc news/"wall street journal" follow that saw both candidates' negative ratings hit an all-time high. brian mooar joins you for more. >> reporter: the campaign has taken a negative turn, so has public opinion on both candidates. mitt romney accused the obama white house of leaking classified information for

political gain. >> this conduct is contemptible. it betrays our national interests. >> reporter: president obama is accusing romney of being less than honest. >> he's been twisting my words around to suggest that i don't value small business. >> reporter: the mud-slinging in this presidential campaign has been early and often. and the latest nbc news/"wall street journal" poll shows both candidates are taking a hit. president obama is seen negatively by 43% of voters. that's his second-lowest number. romney fared slightly worse at 40%. his poorest number yet. rotors see the obama campaign as slightly more negative. >> he tried, you tried, it's okay to make a change. >> reporter: 46% of voters say they don't like mitt romney personally. only 31% say the same about the president. and that's even though romney is seen as the best to improve the economy by a seven-point margin.

both campaigns have eased back on the attacks, but then again the conventions are just over a month away. lynn? >> thanks, here's your first look at other news going on around america today. in arizona, they don't call them flash floods for nothing. a couple near tucson captured these images of rushing waters that overtook a creek bed in seconds. recent wildfires have wiped out a good chunk of the land that would normally control the runoff. and in oklahoma, police had to use a robot to move and then blow up explosives found in a home in tulsa. officers, stumbled upon the catch after a routine traffic stop. they found a cannon with more than a dozen firearms and drugs. two people were arrested. to california, just incredible video that's just been released. it shows a killer whale attacking a trainer at the sea

world resort in 2006. that trainer did survive. but it shows the man as you can see, fighting for eight minutes at times struggling with the whale under water. despite numerous injuries, that trainer still works at sea world. that is frightening to even watch. and in massachusetts, this is one big, bad lobster. a 21-pounder was caught off the coast of cape cod. where was i when this happened? but don't even think about putting on a bib, this big guy is headed for a new life at the new england aquarium in boston. he's not even going to be the record-breaker there. the aquarium once had a 35-pounder. known as lob-zilla. for a look at your national weather, we turn to nbc meteorologist bill karins. >> i'm still not over this. >> we're both big lobster fans here. >> i'm not over the sea world video. >> that's stunning.

>> i'm still shocked. >> snap back, we got weather to do. >> i understand, i've been to the shamu show, i didn't see anything like that. good morning, we're going it watch the same areas as yesterday for the heat. the thunderstorms are further north. yesterday we had the storms dive through chicago, today the northern plain, rolling through the dakotas and now it looks like duluth is getting hit hard. and the drought conditions in the northern plains aren't quite as bad as the central plains. we'll take the rain up through areas like minnesota and it looks like it's going to sweep through the northern half of wisconsin into the upper peninsula. we have a narrow line of showers and thunderstorms that are now moving from madison, wisconsin through rockford, and it looks like these will ever so slowly be approaching areas to the south of chicago. may even get a downpour in chicago. later this afternoon we'll get strong thunderstorms forming on a cold front going through minneapolis, back through areas like omaha, des moines, ames and

"mother jones" reports conservative blogger wes riddle running for republican for texas said president obama secretly gave away several islands to russia and slavery was a net positive for blacks because now they've freedom in america. another texas congressman blasted arizona senator, john mccain, for criticizing michele bachmann for attacking a state department aide for alleged connections to muslim brotherhood. congressman louis gomert called mccain, numb nuts and former ar oar governor mike huckabee is throwing a bone to the chick-fil-a chain, telling people to eat there in opposition to same-sex marriage. and twitter mystery of mitt

corporate reports from u.p.s., whirlpool and at&t missed expectations. more layoffs at cisco drove the dow's third-straight triple-digit loss. and weak enrollment is forcing job cuts at devry, they plunged 25% on the news. netflix spiralled after warning it may have trouble reaching year-end goals for customers. on the bright side wall street welcomed chuy's to the nasdaq. the stock surged 16% in the first day of trade. overseas japan reported a $37 billion trade deficit for the first half of the year and toyota said it sold just shy of five million vehicles, which could put it on track to retake its title of the world's top automaker from general motors. state farm insurance has pulled its ad dollars from broadcasts of penn state football games in the wake of the sandusky sex abuse scandal. in a sad sign of the times

all to see your money how you want. ♪ welcome back to "first look," i'm lynn berry, in sports for two nights in a row, the philadelphia phillies have come back to win against the brewers after trailing late by three or four runs. >> good morning, the first half of the philly season was a major disappointment but for the second straight night they've given their fans a reason to smile. another game, another late-inning comeback in philadelphia. rallied from four runs database on monday and five runs down yesterday. carlos ruiz with a bases-loaded double. that clears the bases and ties the game 6-6. next batter, hunter pence with a flare over ricky's head. rangers and red sox tied 1-1, texas was an out and an inch away from getting out of the ninth.

alex alves with a bloop single gets past andrews by the slimmest margin. in comes a go-ahead run, boston wins it 2-1. baseball, runner on third, aaron cunningham lays down the perfect bunt. safe at the plate. indians cage the tigers 3-. to chicago where the twins josh willingham hit two home runs against the white sox. unfortunately he was the only minnesota player that did anything, sox win big, 11-4. in london, team usa played their final exhibition game before the olympics. got off to a slow start against spain but carmelo anthony knocks down five three-pointers and finishes with 27 points. the americans pull away in the third quarter off the turnover. lebron james flies in for the dunk, the dream team wins 100-78, their first game of the olympics is sunday versus france. here's what they'll be playing
